Prepare before packing
A travel record helps you identify what you carried and locate related proof. It is not a customs declaration, travel permission or insurance certificate. Requirements vary by origin, destination, transit route and personal circumstances, so verify them with the relevant authorities and provider.

Build a journey-specific list
Do not expose the family’s entire inventory when travelling with only a few pieces. Create a journey-specific list and include enough detail to distinguish each item.
- Clear item photographs and a short description.
- Material, weight, hallmark or certificate reference where known.
- Purchase bill, appraisal or other available proof.
- Owner and traveller details when relevant.
- Travel dates and destination for the family’s internal record.

Check rules and coverage directly
Before departure, check airline guidance, customs requirements and the geographic limits of any insurance cover. Do not assume a bill alone removes a declaration requirement or that ordinary household insurance covers international travel.

Close the journey record
After returning, confirm every item is accounted for and end access that is no longer needed. Add any customs, repair or incident documents to the relevant item rather than leaving them in a travel folder.
